Why Canada Needs a Strong Centre — and Why Modern Commons Is the Party to Lead It
In a time of increasing political polarization, a growing number of Canadians are finding themselves politically homeless. According to a 2024 Abacus Data poll, over 41% of Canadians say they don’t feel represented by any of the major political parties. Many are tired of ideological extremes and yearn for a party rooted in evidence, pragmatism, and a deep respect for both individual rights and collective responsibility. That’s why we’re building the Modern Commons Party—to represent the real centre of Canadian life.
The Problem: A Parliament Out of Step
In the 2025 federal election, voter turnout fell to just 59.2%, the lowest in recent history. Experts suggest this drop is partly driven by disillusionment. When politics becomes a tug-of-war between left and right, those in the middle are often ignored, their nuanced views flattened into binary choices.
Recent polling by EKOS shows that nearly half of Canadians (47%) identify as politically centrist. Yet they are underrepresented in a system dominated by two parties pulling further from the middle with each election cycle.
“Canadians want leadership that listens first, not lectures,” says Jack Henry, Interim Leader of the Modern Commons Party. “They want policy built on facts, not fear. And above all, they want to see politics done differently—cooperative, constructive, and honest. That’s exactly what we’re here to deliver.”
The Opportunity: A Commons for All
The political centre is not an empty void—it’s a commons. A space where diverse voices can gather to solve complex challenges through dialogue and mutual respect.
The Modern Commons Party is committed to:
Balancing the budget responsibly while protecting essential services like healthcare and education
Prioritizing climate action that strengthens, rather than sacrifices, local economies
Defending rights and freedoms, including those of marginalized groups, while promoting civic unity
Strengthening the middle class through practical housing, childcare, and economic policies
Ensuring MPs vote with their conscience and constituents, not party whips
In a 2023 Angus Reid Institute study, 72% of Canadians said they would support a new political party that avoided the extremes of current major parties. Canadians are not apathetic. They’re waiting—for something credible, serious, and grounded.
Why Modern Commons?
While other so-called centrist parties offer new names with familiar playbooks, Modern Commons is starting from a clean slate—built for this moment, not the last one.
We believe politics should be:
Open – with transparent finances, open nominations, and public consultations
Accountable – where MPs are free to disagree and vote to their communities values
Collaborative – working across party lines for national benefit
Data-driven – with policies shaped by evidence, not ideology
Our goal is to build a modern coalition of Canadians—from the working-class Prairies to downtown Montreal, from Atlantic Canada to the North—who want a new kind of politics: one that reflects their priorities, not elite agendas.
A Call to Canada’s Centrist Majority
The extremes will always be loud. But it’s the centre that quietly builds the nation.
At Modern Commons, we’re amplifying the voices of Canadians who are thoughtful, principled, and tired of being forced into false choices. Whether you’re a disillusioned Liberal, a Red Tory, a small business owner, a community organizer, or someone who’s never voted before—you belong here.
“This past election was one of the most consequential in modern history,” says Jack Henry. “We waited until it concluded to respect the democratic process. But now it’s time to offer Canadians something new—something honest. Not just a party, but a movement.”
