National Accessibility Week: It’s Time to Build a Canada Without Barriers

As National Accessibility Week 2025 unfolds (May 25–31), the Modern Commons Party reaffirms its unwavering belief: accessibility is a right, not a request. Millions of Canadians—over 1 in 5—live with visible and invisible disabilities. Despite decades of progress, too many still face systemic exclusion in employment, public services, housing, healthcare, and even democracy itself.

“Disability policy isn’t niche. It’s nation-building,” said Jack Henry, Interim Leader of Modern Commons. “When we invest in accessibility, we invest in a fairer, stronger, and more prosperous Canada for everyone.”

The Modern Commons Party is calling for:

  • Universal design standards for federally funded infrastructure

  • Digital accessibility mandates across government websites and services

  • Fully accessible federal elections

  • Disability-led policymaking with permanent advisory roles

  • Accessible transit investment to connect communities

Modern Commons is not just advocating for people with disabilities. We’re building alongside them. Because accessibility doesn’t only benefit one group—it strengthens every community.

This week, and every week, we recommit to listening, learning, and legislating with inclusion at the core. Let’s build a Canada where no one is left outside the door.
