Modern Commons Statement on the Potential Canada Post Strike
As Canadians brace for the possibility of a Canada Post strike, the Modern Commons Party is calling for a balanced and practical approach—one that respects workers’ rights while ensuring continued access to essential services for all Canadians.
Canada Post is more than just a delivery service. It’s a lifeline, especially for rural communities, seniors, small businesses, and those without easy access to alternative courier options. From medical supplies and government documents to small business shipments and personal letters, our public postal system plays a key role in the economic and social fabric of our country.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Canada Post are currently negotiating terms that include job security, working conditions, and fair compensation. While we affirm the right of workers to collectively bargain and advocate for better conditions, we must also consider the downstream effects a prolonged work stoppage could have on Canadians who depend on postal services every day.
“This isn’t just about packages—it’s about people,” said Jack Henry, Interim Leader of the Modern Commons Party. “Canada Post connects Canadians to each other and to opportunity. We urge both CUPW and Canada Post to come to the table in good faith and reach a resolution that ensures continuity of service while respecting the people who deliver it.”
The Modern Commons Party supports:
Fair wages and secure working conditions for postal workers
Modernizing Canada Post to meet 21st-century needs, including enhanced rural delivery, sustainable fleet upgrades, and expanded digital services
Clear communication and contingency planning to minimize disruption for vulnerable communities during labour actions
Canadians are increasingly frustrated by a political culture of gridlock. The Modern Commons Party stands for pragmatic, people-first governance. We believe that the right to organize and strike should never come at the expense of our most vulnerable, and that essential public services must evolve to serve Canadians equitably.
This is a moment that calls for leadership, not finger-pointing. For vision, not short-term fixes.
Modern Commons MP’s would work to ensure that public institutions like Canada Post remain strong, accessible, and future-ready—while continuing to support fair and meaningful labour negotiations.
