On the Delay of Canada’s 2025 Federal Budget.

The Modern Commons Party is voicing serious concern about the federal government’s decision to delay the 2025 federal budget until after the summer parliamentary break. In a time of rising costs, global instability, and growing uncertainty at home, Canadians expect — and deserve — leadership that is transparent, accountable, and proactive.

Canadian Money on a white table

While we acknowledge that the federal government has tabled the 2025–26 Main Estimates, which outline $486.9 billion in planned spending across departments and programs, estimates are not a substitute for a full and comprehensive budget. Without a budget, there is no clear roadmap for how public funds will be managed, what policy priorities will be pursued, or how fiscal sustainability will be maintained.

“A budget isn’t just a financial document — it’s a statement of values,” said [lJack Henry, Interim Leader of the Modern Commons Party. “Canadians need to know how their tax dollars will be spent, especially as families face housing insecurity, affordability pressures, and deep concern over the economic future. Kicking the can down the road sends the wrong message at the wrong time.”

We recognize the challenge of managing a minority government and a recent cabinet shuffle. But Parliament must not leave Ottawa for the summer without a clear economic plan for the country. A functioning democracy requires timely accountability — and Canadians cannot afford to wait until the fall for answers.

This delay risks weakening public trust and limits the ability of elected representatives to ask tough questions and offer solutions on behalf of their constituents.

The Modern Commons Party urges the government to:

  • Release a clear timeline for the delivery of the 2025 budget.

  • Ensure that the budget includes actionable plans on affordability, housing, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth.

  • Restore the principle of transparency by keeping Parliament informed and engaged on fiscal matters year-round.

Canadians are resilient and reasonable — but they deserve clarity. Modern Commons believes in a forward-thinking, balanced approach that values both progress and prudence. Let’s get back to responsible governance.
