Modern Commons Responds to the Liberal Bail Reform Bill

The Modern Commons Party welcomes the government’s recognition that Canada’s bail system needs reform. The Liberal bill takes a step in the right direction by addressing repeat violent offences and intimate partner violence — but it doesn’t go far enough to make the system smarter, fairer, or more effective.

Canada’s bail laws must protect public safety without abandoning the presumption of innocence. Modern Commons supports stronger conditions for violent repeat offenders, particularly those involving weapons, but we also believe reform must go beyond punishment. A modern approach to bail means investing in pre-trial services, mental health supports, legal aid, and data-driven accountability to prevent reoffending.

“The Liberal bill recognizes a real problem but stops short of a real solution. Bail reform should be guided by data, fairness, and public safety, not partisanship. Canadians deserve smart justice that actually works.” said Jack Henry, Leader of the Modern Commons Party

We oppose the Conservatives’ “Jail Not Bail” proposal, which replaces evidence with ideology and risks unconstitutional overreach. But we also challenge the Liberals to deliver more than incremental change. Canadians deserve a justice system that protects communities, respects rights, and uses public funds wisely.
