Canada Day Statement from the Modern Commons Party of Canada
Today, we celebrate Canada—not as a flawless nation, but as a community always striving to be better. Canada Day is a time to reflect on who we are, where we come from, and the country we hope to build together.
In the face of growing economic pressure and renewed tariffs from our closest trading partner, we stand firm: Canada is a proud and sovereign country—not a bargaining chip, not a junior partner, and certainly not for sale. The strength of this country has never come from bending to others, but from working together, across our differences, to move forward.
But true patriotism requires clear vision. For many Indigenous peoples, July 1 is not a celebration—it is a reminder of broken treaties, of colonialism, of a history that still casts a long shadow. We honour that truth. And we recommit ourselves to reconciliation—not as a slogan, but as a commitment to meaningful action rooted in justice and respect.
“We will not trade away our sovereignty to avoid tariffs, nor should we celebrate our country without honouring the truth of its history. A better Canada means defending our economy and living up to our commitments—to Indigenous peoples, and to one another.” said Jack Henry, Interim Leader, Modern Commons Party of Canada.
We believe Canada’s future lies in common ground—a place where Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, newcomers and long-time citizens, rural and urban voices, all see themselves in the decisions made in Ottawa.
This Canada Day, we choose optimism. We choose accountability. And we choose each other.
