Modern Commons Statement on Canada Post Service Cuts
The Modern Commons Party is deeply concerned about the planned Canada Post changes, including the closure of local post offices and the elimination of home delivery. These cuts threaten the accessibility, affordability, and fairness of a service that millions of Canadians rely on every day.
The justification for these cuts is that Canada Post is “losing money.” But Canada Post is a public service, not a business. We do not ask hospitals, emergency services, or public transit to turn a profit before we fund them. We recognize them as essential public goods that exist to serve people, not to generate revenue. Canada Post should be treated the same way. The goal of a public service is not to make money, it is to ensure equitable access for all Canadians.
Ending home delivery and closing post offices disproportionately harms seniors, people with disabilities, and rural residents who may already face barriers to accessing essential services. For many, a nearby post office or a letter carrier at the door is not a convenience, but a necessity. These cuts risk leaving behind the very people who depend on public services the most.
We also stand with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in calling for alternatives that strengthen, not weaken, our postal system. CUPW has long put forward innovative solutions, such as expanding into postal banking, green delivery options, and using Canada Post’s extensive network to improve access to government and community services. Rather than cutting services, Canada should be investing in Canada Post to modernize and expand its role as a vital national connector.
Jack Henry, Leader of the Modern Commons Party, stated: “Public services exist to serve people, not to generate profits. Cutting home delivery and closing post offices because Canada Post is ‘losing money’ misunderstands the very purpose of a public institution. Just like hospitals, emergency services, and public transit, Canada Post is essential. Canadians deserve a strong, modern postal service that connects every community in our country, not more cuts.”
The Modern Commons Party believes in protecting public services and ensuring they are modernized in ways that are inclusive, sustainable, and equitable. We will continue to support workers, communities, and CUPW in defending Canada Post as a public institution that belongs to all Canadians.
