Modern Commons Party Statement on Canada’s Recognition of Palestine, and the Need for a Ceasefire and Arms Embargo
This week, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will formally recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. This decision, while conditional on a commitment to democratic reforms by the Palestinian Authority—including elections without Hamas and meaningful steps toward demilitarization—is a long overdue and necessary move in Canada’s foreign policy. The Modern Commons Party fully supports this shift. But we also believe recognition alone is not enough.
Canada Must Back Recognition With Action
For decades, successive governments have spoken in vague terms about a “two-state solution,” while doing little to make peace a reality. Prime Minister Carney’s announcement is a welcome departure from that pattern. By setting clear expectations—elections, reform, and demilitarization—Canada is sending a message that peace must be built on democratic foundations and accountability.
However, words must be followed by action. The Modern Commons Party is calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the West Bank, and for a complete suspension of arms exports to all parties actively engaged in the conflict. Canada cannot support peace while simultaneously exporting weapons to regions in crisis. It is inconsistent with international law, and incompatible with our values.
“Recognition is a vital step toward peace, justice, and dignity—but it must be matched by decisive action. Canada should not be complicit in a war it claims to want resolved. Ceasefire and an arms embargo are necessary steps toward a durable and just peace.” — Jack Henry, Leader of the Modern Commons Party
A Path Forward for Canada
We believe the path to peace lies not just in diplomacy, but in principled leadership. That means:
Recognizing Palestine as a state, with the conditions necessary to support stability and reform.
Demanding an immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
Enacting a comprehensive arms embargo to end Canada’s material contributions to a war that continues to devastate lives.
Standing on the Side of Justice
The Modern Commons Party stands firmly in support of a two-state solution grounded in mutual recognition, democratic legitimacy, and human rights. We recognize the pain and loss on all sides—and we refuse to look away. Peace requires more than hope. It requires bold, moral leadership. Canada has the opportunity to be on the right side of history. Let’s not waste it.
